Letter of Resignation
from the Former Executive Advisory Board Members of
the CFAA to the Director of the CFAA, Mr. Godwin
Omane
Dear Mr. Omane: Resignation from Executive Advisory
Board of the CFAA and the Organization.
We felt honored and privileged to be invited by you
in forming the Center for African Affairs (CFAA) in
Denver, Colorado, USA. The CFAA is an organization
that has broad objectives that included among others
(a) to bring unity and understanding among all
Africans and people of African descent in Colorado,
(b) to help improve the standards of living of our
members by making various opportunities open to them
and (c) to help our members participate fully in the
affairs of Colorado at all levels. These are noble
ideals and we all strived to help realize the
formation of this organization. During our brief
working relationship with you, we have made
significant progress in the following areas: (a)
various officials were elected to represent the
organization, (b) the organization was registered in
the name of its officials, and (c) we have drafted a
constitution although this document was yet to be
adopted. We worked with you with the expectation and
with the impression given by you that the CFAA was a
shared enterprise for us all. In such a situation we
accepted and were willing to be held accountable for
the manner in which the CFAA conducts its affairs in
the state of Colorado. Therefore, with such
responsibility we deserved to be consulted in any
significant decision making process that concerns
the affairs of the CFAA.
However, in the month
of July 2003, you have: (a) taken actions on behalf
of the CFAA for which we do not believe you had any
authority to do and (b) made certain statements
which were unacceptable and surprised all members of
the Executive Advisory Board. All these actions by
you led to very serious breach of trust between you
and us. The constitution which was due to be adopted
this past Friday clearly clarified and spelled out
the functions of the various officers of the CFAA.
The constitution did not have any provisions for
unilateral action by the Director with respect to
the dissolution or suspension of the Advisory Board.
The Board is puzzled and bewildered as to the
circumstances leading to this act. You said it
yourself that the Mayor had almost got fed up with
dealing with African associations due to disunity
amongst the groups and gave example of Senegalese,
Nigerians, etc. All of us were of the conviction
that the idea of forming such an organization was to
help and assist our African brethren and your acts
seem to be in conflict with what you originally
stood for. We cannot understand how you could betray
the objective we so valiantly supported and
sacrificed so much for. We sacrificed precious time
which we could have spent with our families because
we thought this was a noble cause.
The bizarre nature of
all this is that on July 10, 2003, you took it upon
yourself to suspend the CFAA Executive Advisory
Board without consultations. In your e-mail messages
of July 10 and 11, 2003, to Dr, Bakary Sonko, you
have categorically stated that you are the Founder
and Owner of the CFAA. again is a serious breach of
our trust in that you have deceived us in believing
that the CFAA belongs to us all Africans.
In the light of the
various serious breaches of trust your actions and
statements created between you and us, and the sense
of enormous responsibility and integrity we hold
ourselves to on account of our actions and
statements on behalf of the CFAA, we feel that we do
not have any alternative but to resign with
immediate effect from the Executive Advisory Board
of the CFAA. Furthermore, we the undersign
dissociate ourselves completely from all actions
taken on behalf of or entered into on behalf of the
CFAA by you, Mr. Godwin Omane, or any official of
the CFAA from hence forth. This action by us is
retroactive as of our last Executive Advisory Board
meeting held on July 27, 2003. We also wish to
indicate that we absolve ourselves from all
transactions, financial or otherwise that you might
have entered into on behalf of the CFAA for which we
were not made aware of. We feel strongly that we
will not serve the best interest of the people we
represent by remaining in the CFAA.
We wish you and your organization luck.
Sincerely: Dr. Bakary Sonko, Alioune Sogue,
Dr. Dominic Magaisa, Julie Magaisa, Jean-Pierre
Yoboue,
Pastor Jeneth Davis.
