ACC Meets with Representatives 
from the CAO

 

Thursday, October 2, 2003, the Program Manager of the African Community Center, Jennifer Gueddiche and her Community Resource Developer, Chitahka Floore, met with representatives from the CAO Dr. Bakary Sonko (President), Mr. Alioune Sogue (Projects Coordinator) and Mr. Andrew Wamukoya (Alternate Secretary) at the 2404 East Colfax Avenue offices of ACC. From notes taken by the ACC Community Resource Developer, Chitahka Floore:

  Program Manager: Ms. Gueddiche holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science and a Masters degree in International Development studies. She has over five years experience working with refugees, community resources and fundraising. Additionally, she has seven years experience working with low income housing programs and has worked in apartment management. Jennifer oversees all programming and reports directly to ECDC President Tsehaye Teferra.

        > The ACC expresses its appreciation to the CAO for conveying its interest in working together for the benefit of Colorado's African community.
        > The meeting convened with a short tour of the ACC facility.
        > CAO explicated the advent of their organization as well as their members' disassociation with the Center for African Affairs. The mission and purpose of both CAO and ACC were discussed.
        > The CAO spoke about specific program areas in which the African immigrant community have expressed interest, that include but are not limited to, starting businesses and assisting Africans in their homelands with computers and medical needs.
        > ACC expressed interest in having a member on its advisory board from CAO. ACC also discussed extending an invitation for office space to CAO as well as community based organizations and MAA's (Mutual Assistance Associations) when ACC relocated to a larger space.
        > The ACC will be adding a section to their currently "Under Construction" Website that will feature a Community Calendar in which they would like CAO to post notices of community events (http://www.africancommunitycenter.net
        > ACC also discussed the CAO and its assistance with new refugee arrivals. Currently, ACC has several Liberian families that would benefit from a visit from members of their community. In the future, ACC would like members of the CAO to make a home visit to newly arrived members of their respective countries.
        > The meeting was concluded and CAO will be holding a meeting with members to discuss the possibilities of working with ACC on the items listed above prior to further discussion.
